Course Description

In Grade 7, instructional time will focus on four critical areas: (1) developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (2) developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations; (3) solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume; and (4) drawing inferences about populations based on samples. In each area, they will operate a standards-based classroom in which students will have the opportunity to grapple with, make sense of, and apply the mathematics.  The standards are fully explained on the Common Core Georgia Standards website.

Assessments

There will be weekly assessments during each unit of study.  It is the student’s responsibility to be diligent with study habits, notebook organization, and math homework to ensure every possible success in this class.

Important Information

Students are expected to complete and turn in assignments on time

Students who are absent will have the same number of days absent plus one to make up all work.  For example, if a student is absent for two days, he/she would have three days to complete makeup work.  Tests and quizzes should be made up when the student returns.

10 points will be deducted each day (up to three days) for late work.

Grading Policy

Unit Tests and projects: 60%

Homework, quizzes, daily classroom activities, skill checks: 40%

Grade Recovery:

Students will not have the opportunity to recover quizzes. Grade recovery will be available for any student who earns a test grade below a 70%.  Students will need to complete an error analysis sheet and attend a tutoring session with either Mr, Burgess or Mrs. Charles within two weeks of receiving the assessment grade. After the two week window students will not be able to recover the test.  After completing error analysis sheet and attending tutoring, the student must schedule a time (with their teacher) to re-take the assessment. IMPORTANT: Retakes need to be taken before school hours. Class time will not be used to retake assessments.

Help Sessions:  The tutoring schedule for each teacher is as follows:

Mr. Burgess- Tuesdays and Thursdays 7:30- 8:00 and also by appointment

Mrs. Charles- Mondays by appointment only and Wednesdays.

Classroom Expectations:

  1. Students are expected to arrive on time

  2. Students should be prepared with daily materials.

  3. Appropriate, respectful behavior is expected at all times.

Student Expectations:

Mathematics is not a “spectator sport.”  Active participation is crucial to student success.  To that end, students are expected to:

  1. Maintain a math notebook, in which they will take notes (including copying example problems) on a daily basis.  This is extremely critical to student success since we do not use a traditional textbook; therefore, students will rely heavily on their notes and examples as a reference throughout the year.

  2. Complete all assignments, including homework and projects.

  3. Be attentive in class, participate and remain on-task (even during partner or group work).

  4. Work collaboratively with peers- actively participate and contribute to group assignments.

  5. Ask questions when additional information is needed.
